Stephen Kearney is backing the campaign to save doctors surgeries
New Labour Government plans could mean the closure of your local doctor's surgery. The Government wants to build new 'polyclinics' with up to twenty GPs all working under one roof.
Labour Health Minister Lord Darzi has said that 'polyclinics' could replace the local doctors surgery. Doctors leaders and Liberal Democrats are opposing the plan to impose 'polyclinics'.
Liberal Democrats campaigner Stephen Kearney said:
"Local doctors surgeries are a key part of towns and villages across South Oxfordshire. The loss of these surgeries would cause huge damage to our local communities. We have already lost too many local services including post offices and local shops."
The closure of local doctors surgeries would leave local people facing long journeys to their nearest 'polyclinic'.
'Polyclinics' are only likely to be built in larger towns.
Stephen Kearney of Henley constituency Liberal Democrats added:
"This kind of health solution is totally wrong for an area like ours. I will fight it all the way."
The BMA have launched a major campaign against the Government's 'polyclinics' plan. They say that 'polyclinics' will damage GP services, fragment patient care and lead to the closure of hundreds of small practices.
A BMA Spokesperson said:
"Family Doctors are deeply worried that GP surgeries will go the same way as local branches of banks, post offices, and NHS dentists."
