The Environment Agency has a novel plan to cope with the increased flooding and safety risks when Thames lock keepers lose their riverside homes: webcams on weirs!
The EA's Thames waterways manager Eileen McKeever told concerned members of the Oxford Flood Alliance that to ensure riverside safety was not compromised by the sale of lock houses, EA staff were considering the use of web cameras at weirs. McKeever told the Abingdon Herald they were looking at "new technology, and ways it can increase information about the river".
If webcams really can spring into action to rescue boaters or operate old-fashioned manual river equipment in all weathers to prevent flooding, the new technology is impressive indeed. Back in the real world, meanwhile campaign website www.saveourservice.org points out that residential lock keepers have hundreds of years of experience between them and knowledge of the river "cannot be replaced by a web-cam positioned on a river, centralised office or seasonally appointed staff."
