Local schools doing a fantastic job: but fair funding still needed

7.22.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 20th Jun 2008

Chinnor's two primary schools are doing a fantastic job due to top-notch leadership and effective management. But schools in rural areas are still losing out because of a Government funding formula that does not take proper account of their needs.

Despite a below inflation rise in the amount of money the Government gives the school for each pupil through its funding formula - Mill Lane Community Primary School is planning an 8.3% rise in overall expenditure this year and investing in building works during the summer.

"Chinnor's schools are doing a great job of using their resources to provide an excellent education for local children. They have a lot to be proud of," said Lib Dem Campaigner Stephen Kearney.

"My beef is with the Government. The current Government formula does not take full account of the needs of schools in rural areas and I will be campaigning for a fair deal for our local schools."
