What now for post office services in Crowmarsh?

5.10.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 16th Jun 2008

The placing of Crowmarsh Gifford's sub-post office on the list announced by Post Office Ltd for closure was a huge disappointment to this community.

A great many people in Crowmarsh are feeling let down by the loss of this important local service. The branch serves a wide community and a large number of people from all over South Oxfordshire use the branch, not just the community in Crowmarsh itself.

Local Lib Dem campaigner Stephen Kearney said: "Crowmarsh provides employment to many people in the wider community."

Stephen continued:

"It has the district council offices, the Environment Agency, Howberry Business Park and many more businesses, whose staff regularly use the Post Office in Crowmarsh. This is a profitable branch. It makes no sense."

Loyal customers will be forced to make the trip to neighbouring Wallingford which is expected to result in increased traffic congestion across the bridge into Wallingford.

What is most worrying is that the Wallingford branch is based in a temporary cabin which will simply not be able to cope with the extra business.

The community in Crowmarsh deserves better.

"The decision to close the branch was ill-thought out, ill-considered and illogical" concluded Stephen Kearney.
